Otoritas Kanal Panama (ACP) terpaksa menungurangi lalu lintas kapal di terusan tersebut.

Dua danau buatan di Provinsi Colon pun mengering imbas kelangkaan curah hujan. Danau tersebut biasanya memasok dan mengalirkan air ke kanal.

Sebagai informasi, pada 2022, lebih dari 14.000 kapal yang membawa 518 juta ton kargo melewati kanal tersebut. Lalu lintas ini menyumbang US$2,5 miliar atau sekitar Rp37 triliun ke finansial Panama.

Ancaman kekeringan ini sebenarnya sudah terlihat pada 2019 lalu. Kala itu, pasokan air tawar turun menjadi tiga miliar meter kubik, sementara untuk mengoperasikan kanal butuh 5,25 miliar meter kubik.
